Travel Advisor Spotlight: Pascal Lee

Welcome to our Travel Advisor Spotlight series, where we shine a light on the incredible professionals who we have worked with through the years across the TravelSMG events!  Today, we're thrilled to introduce you to Pascal Lee from Carpe Diem Travel.

What got you into the Travel Industry and how long have you been an Advisor?

With over 32 years in the business, my journey began in Holland, where I was born and raised. As an exchange student, I came to America, fell in love with the country and its people, and decided to make it my home. Combining my European roots with a passion for travel, I’ve found the perfect career in helping my clients discover the world.

What made you first realize the value that a Travel Advisor brings to a consumer’s travel experience?
Wanting to share the Europe I knew with others; I first discovered the incredible value of a Travel Advisor while planning a complex trip in the pre-Google days. I realized how much others could benefit from expert guidance, making travel seamless instead of stressful. It’s that personal touch—knowing the best spots, uncovering hidden gems, and ensuring everything flows effortlessly—that transforms a trip into something truly special.

What does being a Travel Advisor mean to you?

Being a Travel Advisor means channeling my wanderlust and passion for exploring the world into helping others discover new places and cultures. It’s about drawing on my broad experiences to match people with destinations that truly speak to their hearts. The best part? Hearing the stories from happy clients when they return from their perfect trip—it’s the ultimate reward and reminds me why I love what I do.
What’s your favorite type of trip to plan for a client?

My favorite type of trip to plan is one that’s full of new, exciting experiences off the beaten path. I love crafting journeys that offer clients unique adventures, hidden gems, and personal touches that go beyond the usual tourist spots. It’s thrilling to help them discover something truly special and unexpected.

Where is your favorite place to travel?

My favorite place to travel? It’s always the last gem I’ve discovered—whether it’s the genuine people and undiscovered areas of Istria, the charming Baltics, the vibrant Balkans, the rich history of Egypt, or the awe-inspiring experiences of a safari. Each destination brings something unique and unforgettable.

Who is your favorite Travel Supplier to work with?

My favorite travel suppliers to work with are Real Croatia, whom I met during the virtual European Travel Agent Forum in 2020; Ciao Italy, which I connected with in Senigallia; Chameleon for their comprehensive European offerings; and AmaWaterways for their seamless river cruise experiences. Each brings something special to the table and enhances the travel experiences I can offer my clients.

Where do you go to keep up-to-date on all the industry news and information?

I rely on a mix of sources: other agents I've met during conferences, local Destination Management Companies (DMCs), and some very helpful travel agent Facebook groups. These diverse connections and communities provide valuable insights and support, helping me keep my knowledge fresh and relevant.

What’s one piece of advice that you would give to newer Advisors in the Industry?

My advice for new advisors is to really get to know your clients and their travel dreams. Building genuine relationships with them makes all the difference. Also, connect with reliable suppliers who share your passion for travel—they’ll become your go-to partners and help you make every trip memorable. The personal connections you build will be your greatest asset.

What’s some advice that you would give to your fellow Advisors to keep them motivated when they get frustrated by their day-to-day?

When the day gets tough (and they will!), remind yourself that you’re basically a travel superhero—without the cape, of course. Take a minute to scroll through those glowing client reviews and remember the excitement you bring to their trips. And hey, when all else fails, grab a coffee (or a glass of wine) and vent to a fellow advisor who gets it. Sometimes a little laughter and a good chat can turn a rough day into a great one.

What’s your favorite TravelSMG event to attend?

I’ve attended some fantastic TravelSMG events—Thailand, Senigallia, Vegas, and Madeira. Each one was like a VIP pass to a world of unique cultures and experiences. It’s tough to pick a favorite because each event had its own flair. Thailand was a spicy adventure with elephant love, Senigallia was a charming Italian escape, Vegas was glitzy and fabulous, and Madeira was like a dreamy island getaway with a touch of adventure (canyoning anyone?). If I had to choose, though, I’d say my favorite is the one that comes next—because who doesn’t love a new adventure?

How has participating in TravelSMG events helped you as an Advisor?

Participating in TravelSMG events has been a game-changer for me as an advisor. It’s not just about the industry connections, although those are fantastic. It’s also about the friendships you build with fellow travel advisors from around the globe—those relationships turn into a supportive network. Plus, meeting invaluable DMC contacts has given me access to insider knowledge and unique experiences that I can pass on to my clients. Overall, these events are like a travel advisor’s secret sauce for success!
